The only way to know is to preform a radon test.
Radon is a naturally occurring, cancer-causing, radioactive gas that comes from the natural breakdown (radioactive decay) of uranium deep within the earth.You cannot see, smell or taste radon, but it may be entering into your house through small cracks and openings. It can also penetrate through concrete blocks and mortar. The Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today. The home radon test is not part of the house inspection but may be added as an additional service and testing for radon in the house takes a minimum of 48 hours to complete. It is strongly recommended by Midwest Home and Property Inspection to have this home radon testing performed prior to closing on a house. If high concentrations of radon are detected it should not deter a home buyer from purchasing the home. There are ways to reduce it to acceptable levels. Negotiations may be entered into between buyers and sellers to arrange for a radon mitigation system to be installed .
